May 20025 meeting notes.

Carving by Jamie Russel

The May meeting of the SWG saw 27 members join together for an evening of fun and sharing. President Kelly-Robyn opened the meeting with the Show and Tell so the six members who brought items had a chance to explain what they had been working on. Then Glen Friesen coordinated a discussion on how various people incorporate wooddworking into their lives. Five people with various backgrounds, from full time to part time woodworkers, answered questions and give insights into many aspects of this craft. A big thanks to Glen and the participants: Jamie Russell, Willie Marks, Kevin Brehon, Dave Dunkley and Kym Henry for this engaging and interesting forum. Mel Genge talked about the Saskatchewan Craft Council Dimensions awards and the meeting ended with the Door Prize draws.

SHOW AND TELL.

Trent Watts made a box for the back of his bicycle. The box is made from Baltic Birch plywood with Walnut inserts to strengthen the 45 degree corners.

Jamie Russell brought his latest glass topped table made from Manitoba Maple, Ash and Cherry.

Mark Noete made a hollow turned globe out of Maple with a finial made from dyed Ash and a carved base from the same Ash.

Kevin Brehon brought some of his innovative Kumiko designs.
A lidded box made from Bird’s Eye Maple, Basswood, Spruce and fabric.
The flowers were dyed using Kool-Aid.

Don Rogers brought a beautiful folding stool. The design is such that when folded into a stool it is very stable, yet with a slight uplift you can fold it for storage or carrying.

Mel Genge made various sizes of rolling pins out of Walnut and Maple and some pepper mills as well.

Mel Genge presented the ‘Excellence in Wood Award’, sponsored by the Saskatchewan Woodworkers’ Guild at the Dimensions Awards Ceremony held at the Remai Arts Centre. Here he is with Ian Stark the winner of the award.
