Comfort birds are a good beginner project to learn some basic carving. Carved comfort birds have become known as being given to those in need as a token of support and an act of kindness, Comfort birds are often given to those in hospice or going through difficult times such as illness, homelessness, elderly or people generally struggling. The fitting size and smoothness provide something for the recipient to hold on to and gently rub giving them a sense of peacefulness. Often, for those who are in chemotherapy treatments, the birds are carved rough to provide something more tactile as patients often lose a sense of touch in the fingertips while undergoing treatment.
