Carved Hearts for The Compassionate Friends

Carving by Jamie Russel

The Compassionate Friends is a self-help non profit group of parents who have experienced the death of a child.

For many years, former member Cal Isaacson has carved and finished a number of comfort hearts that get distributed to members of this non-profit group.  With all the times of carving these hearts, Cal used caragana because of the grief and stress and heartache that parents go thru after losing their child. It reminded him of the stress and rigors that the caragana goes thru during our winters.  We are looking to carry on this tradition in providing hearts to the Saskatoon chapter.

I can make blanks available for those who wish to carve and sand ready for finishing which I can complete and hand over to the group.  I have limited supplies of caragana, so if someone or knows someone who has some caragana 2 ½” minimum diameter, I can mill up and make up the blanks.  If need be, we can use any closed grain hardwoods so if you have some minimum 3/8” thick that you are willing to donate, that will work as well.  If you have any questions or wish to donate materials or time, contact me at saskcarver@gmail.com.
