April Demo and Show & Tell

Carving by Jamie Russel

This blog post is short on text and information on woods as all I have to work from is the pictures and a bit that I heard and remembered from the zoom meeting.

Demo:

Brad Watts demonstrated building a scale Red River Cart.

Note his T-shirt!: "Red River Cart the Original All-Terrain Vehicle"

Here Brad is assembling a wheel to the axle.

Here he has both wheels attached to the axle.

Brad has one of the shafts sitting beneath the axle.

Brad in putting cross pieces into the first shaft. Note the mortises that the side stiles will be fitted into.

And the second shaft is being mounted on the cross pieces.

Here the stiles are being inserted into the shafts.

The shafts are mounted onto the axle.

The top rails are being fitted onto the tenons on the stiles.

Here a piece that will be the side of the floor is being installed. Note the joinery here. The carts used mortise and tenon and dowel joints. No metal fixing were used.

The floor is being installed.

Here is the completed cart!

And finally here is the finished cart hitched to the oxen that pulled this cart. Apparently the wheels were not greased as that would have collected dirt and sand which would have worn out the axle or wheel hub, or both. The lack of grease cause these cart to make screeching noises as the moved.
