The joinery project is a simple 4 sided box sized for napkins. I'll be focusing on the dovetail joinery at the four corners using predominantly hand tool techniques. Although all tools and materials will be supplied, there are a few tools students could bring to help with work flow. Suggested tools to bring are: a small assortment of chisels, a wooden mallet, and a hand saw..

Students are offered a choice on what type of paddle they would like to make,. A regular straight paddle, a power stroke paddle of an ergonomic bent shaft paddle. For the power stroke and bent shaft paddles, Doug will assist the students in laminating the paddle shaft, adding the blade pieces and handle blocks. From a pre-made paddle blank, the students will then procedd to cut out the basic paddle shape, power plane it to rough finished thickness and sand the entire paddle. Once sanding is complete the students will spend the remainder of class time adding a custom wood-burned image to the blade of their paddles. For this class all materials are supplied..

Pyrography or pyrogravure is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. Doug will introduce the students to the tools he uses and recommends and describe how he uses them. Students will briefly practise using the equipment before selecting an image that they would like to do. Doug will provide assistance and feedback for the students as the class progresses. For this class all materials are supplies. If the student has a woodburner they are encouraged to bring it with them to the class.
